As you may know, we are constantly working towards the purchase of several acres on which we will eventually build a Sanctuary and Adoption Center for senior pets. We began our campaign in February of 2008 and will continue to work to raise funds for this goal.
Foster a Pet In exchange for caring for one of our adoptable pets, Young At Heart Pet Rescue pays 100% of all medical bills related to that particular pet, provides any and all necessary items needed for that pet, such as food, bowls, toys, bed, crate or litter box. We strive to find our foster homes pets that work well with their situation, i.e. dog-friendly, kid-friendly, etc. Often, because our pets are older, the transition is easy and there are few issues. However, since most of the pets we rescue are from pounds, we won't always know their background or their situations- that's where the foster homes really help us out! Foster homes help us figure out the best home for each pet. Maybe your foster pet needs someone who is home a lot, or needs another dog to play with, or needs a home where he/she is the only pet. Our foster homes help us place each pet as carefully as we can so that both our adopters and our pets are happy. Does fostering sound like something you would like to try? Volunteer Because we are an all-volunteer organization, we have many opportunities inside the organization where you can donate your time. Our volunteers keep our rescue running smoothly and keep our costs to a minimum. If you have some time on your hands and you love to help out a good cause, take a look to see if any of these opportunities intrigue you: *General Volunteers - we need volunteers to help us run special events, fundraisers, adoption events and more! No special training needed, you just need to have a love of animals, and be willing to roll up your sleeves, dig in and help out at events to help us continue to help mature pets! Volunteer opportunities are emailed to our volunteer database- simply respond to those events/activities you would like to help out at, and ignore the ones you don’t. We do not have time commitment requirements- just help out when you can! Email us at volunteer@yahpetrescue.com to be added to our volunteer list. No experience needed, just a big heart! *Event & Fundraiser Committee - hard-working and outgoing volunteers who love animals are needed to help organize, set-up, and run our events and fundraisers. Responsibilities include working with a handful of other volunteers committed to the same projects. Must be able to work well with a team, be willing to talk to the public, and be willing to meet occasional deadlines. Creative and fun-loving people who do well with the public would do best on this team. This is an opportunity to have fun while working on the core events that help this little rescue provide the best care for our animals! *Auction Committee - a mostly “from home” committee, this committee is dedicated to bringing in items for silent auctions for the rescue. Items can be secured in several ways: going “door to door” visiting local businesses, via phone calls to businesses, and via email/mail to businesses. Items secured for auctions will help Young At Heart raise money for our *Blog Guru - Love to write? Have a working knowledge of what brings people to blogs? Love to write about events and animals? Than this job is for you! We need a Blog Guru to keep our blog up to date on rescue events, special needs animals, fundraisers, pet tips and more. Must have access to computer and internet, be able to send and receive pictures via email, and have a good working knowledge of surfing the web for true and correct information on pet care. Job pays in pats on the backs and a lot of warm fuzzies from the public. Email an essay on why you want to the job and a sample blog, if you have one, to info@yahpetrescue.com and put “Blog Guru” in the heading. *E- Newsletter Guru – If you have a little knowledge about e-newsletters and a little knowledge about Constant Contact, we could use your help! Once a month, we need a volunteer who loves to make pretty e-newsletters create a newsletter with all of our latest news and events to our database. Send email to info@yahpetrescue.com with a sample of an e-newsletter that you have done, and a little something about why you want to wag the tails of our rescued pets with your talent! *Adoption Center Volunteers - Our cat adoption center is a small, cageless donated space at Best Friends Pet Care. We are in need of volunteers to help clean the litter boxes, the floors, the windows, the cages, and play and socialize with the cats. Ideally, we are looking for people who can go once a week on a fairly regular basis, but are open to all schedules. The adoption center holds 4-5 cats at a time, and being small, needs very regular cleaning to look its best and to keep the environment as healthy as possible for our cats. Grooming of the cats, including cleaning ears and clipping nails and overall health checks, are another opportunity for those with ample cat-knowledge. Email volunteer@yahpetrescue.com for more info. *Poster and Brochure Volunteers - Volunteers wanted who have printers at home that can print up our adoptable animals and post them at local businesses on a weekly basis in order to increase our adoptions. We can provide a “poster” format for Word so that you can simply “plug in” adoptable animals. Must have computer and printer at home, and be able to keep a list of local businesses that display our pets so that we can thank them by posting their info on our website. We are also looking for volunteers to go to vets, groomers, dog trainers, etc. with our brochures. We will provide the brochure and brochure holders for each business. Must be able to keep a list of businesses that display our brochures so that we can thank them and be able to keep tabs on who needs refills. For more info, email volunteer@yahpetrescue.com . *Phone Volunteer - outgoing “people persons” needed to return phone calls from the general public. Timeliness is a must, as well as excellent self-control and “tongue biting” skills. Must be able to be polite at all times, keep your patience, and remember that everything you say represents Young At Heart Pet Rescue. Think of yourself as our customer service representative! Long distance phone calls are not required. This is a great volunteer position for a mom with kids in school, student or retired person, or someone with a lot of free time to talk. Job requires 1-2 hours a day on most days. Weekday and Weekend phone duties available. You can choose a single day or multiple days of the week. A great way to help get our pets into wonderful homes! Email volunteer@yahpetrescue.com for more info. *Animal Transport – volunteers needed to help us save the lives of animals scheduled for euthanasia by providing transport to the vet, boarding facilities, and foster homes from either the pound itself or by meeting up with other transporters from the facilities. You must have reliable car, cell phone, and patience with scared animals. You can write-off $.14 per mile on your taxes for transportation directly related to the rescue of our animals! Transports happen every day of the week. Please email volunteer@yahpetrescue.com with the days of the week you are available for transports. Transports are usually no further East than Chicago, no further South than Joliet, no further North than Antioch, and no further West than Marengo. Crafters & Bakers – Are you crafty? Do you like to sew, knit, or put together fun dog and cat items? Maybe you like to bake? All sorts of crafters and bakers are needed to restock our supplies for upcoming fundraisers. The rescue sells handmade items and goodies at all fundraisers, bringing in a significant amount of funds to our animals in need. We are in need of people to sew dog and cat toys (patterns/supplies provided), knit boutique-worthy items like scarves, socks, etc, and volunteers to make “no-sew” fleece blankets as well. Like to bake? Our gourmet dog cookie fundraiser is coming up, and we need volunteers to bake, decorate, and wrap dog cookies. All supplies are provided. For more info, email volunteer@yahpetrescue.com .*Donate Whether you'd like to help financially or with supplies, donations are what keep us going.
