ANIMAL INTAKE & RELINQUISHMENTS:
If you are a Pound/Animal Control Facility/Veterinary Clinic:
Please email intake@yahpetrescue.com or call 847-529-2025 with a description and location of the pet in need, and a photo if possible, along with estimated time left. We are a very small organization at this time, and can only help a fraction of the animals that need our help. We currently only accept animals from pounds/shelters/vets from within Illinois.
Rehoming An Animal: If you are a private party with a pet you need to relinquish, Young At Heart Pet Rescue no longer accepts animals from the general public. Our reason is simple- we need to help the older animals that have no one to speak for them, the ones who are on "death row".
If you need to rehome an older pet, there are a few things that can be done to help them find a home:
1. Have a complete senior pet check-up performed at your vet. Often behavioral issues, such as incontinence, can be easily addressed with some blood work and medication. If you cannot keep your pet, this will also assure new adopters of the health of your pet and any possible implications thereof.
2. Post creative, full-color flyers with an adorable picture of your older pet in places where senior citizens congregate- churches, senior centers, etc. Give as much information on your pet as possible, including health issues, why you are giving your pet up, and likes/dislikes of the pet. Ask for a donation to your/their favorite animal shelter or rescue instead of money for your pet. Ask to see where the pet is going to live, a veterinary reference if they've had pets before, and offer to take the animal back should the adoption not work out. You can also post online at www.petfinder.com in the classified section.
3. Get on as many waiting lists at no-kill animal shelters as you can. The older the animal, the less of a chance that they will be accepted by many local shelters. Be prepared to wait.
4.
If you are a shelter or rescue in Illinois that actively tries to place senior
dogs and cats through your program, and you would like us to courtesy post for
you, please email webmaster@yahpetrescue.com with a detailed description, and
contact information, along with a clear picture of the pet available. Please
contact us when the pet has been adopted so we can keep our website as up to
date as possible.
Thank you for helping senior pets find a home!
